California Real Estate Training and License Renewals

Real estate licensing requirements vary from state to state. In California, for example, when it's time to get your license, you'll need to complete standardized coursework in a formal real estate training program. Once you've graduated, you'll need to provide proof of legal residency and pass the 150-question California real estate exam. Online training is available for those who haven't completed education requirements, and there are online refresher courses for those who need to renew their real estate license.

In California, real estate licenses are issued for a four-year period. The state sends out reminders to renew approximately 90 days before your license expires. If you renew in time, you can complete the entire renewal online.

California-based real estate salespersons renewing for the first time will need to take four continuing education courses totaling 12 hours. Online training programs will help facilitate the process. For each renewal thereafter, you'll be asked to complete 45 hours of additional training in agency, consumer protection, ethics, trust fund handling, and fair housing.

California Real Estate License Renewal for Brokers
Licensed real estate brokers in California renewing for the first time are required to complete 45 hours of training, with another 45 hours in real estate courses for each subsequent renewal. There are schools throughout the state that offer online education for the required renewal coursework.

If you let your licensing lapse past the renewal deadline, California will accept applications for renewal for two years before requiring you to start over. But you are not allowed to practice real estate activities in the state until your license is renewed and certified by state records.

It makes sense in California to complete your 45-hour renewal courses and eLicensing procedure on schedule, rather than to commit to the traditional two 18-month conditional courses that you'll need if you let things slide.
