Michigan Fashion Design School: Working for Students
The Michigan Apparel Association serves fashion buyers from around the U.S. and the world with showrooms that are open year round as well as several shows a year. As a fashion insider, you'll be part of this international scene, if you opt to study fashion design at a Michigan school.
Choose a technical school for your fashion education or opt for a university program in apparel and textile design. The fashion design programs at technical schools give you the option of two-year or four-year design degrees. Here, your studies will blend pattern design and garment construction with merchandising and market training, as well as the communication skills you'll use to sell yourself as a designer.
A university education in apparel and textile design places the practice of fashion design in its historical and social contexts. Design technology is central to the curriculum, and visiting study in New York City is an option. Internships are optional but available, and you can even stay on for a graduate degree in fashion or textile design.
A recent Michigan State University research project reports that, "Michigan, while not a major textile fiber producer, has a significant number of apparel, textile, and other softgoods design and production firms. Michigan also has a major computer software design firm producing state-of-the-art programs for two- and three-dimensional apparel and textile design." So, if you fall in love with Michigan while you're studying at a MI fashion design school, you'll have many opportunities to forge your fashion career in Michigan.
