Fast Facts

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 1,283,000 single-family houses were sold in the U.S. in 2005, and most were sold by one of the 460,000 real estate agents currently working in the U.S. In addition to the 3- to 6-percent commission they and their brokers receive with each home sale, real estate agents enjoy the flexibility of creating their own schedules.

How to Enter the Real Estate Market

Every U.S. state requires real estate agents and brokers to be licensed. Licensure is usually completed in one to three years, most often through online programs. Your online real estate courses will teach you about real estate marketing, appraisal, specific state laws, property management, and online search tools.

Many real estate brokers and offices are seeking college graduates with bachelor's degrees to fill positions. The courses you'll take as an undergraduate, in real estate, business administration, economics, and English, will help you tackle the increasingly complex legal issues involved in real estate transactions.
